Each night we slip into unconsciousness as our body rests and repairs from the activities of our day. The quality of our sleep can profoundly affect our energy, concentration and overall health.
One of the many factors that determine whether we get deep, restful sleep is our pillow.
If you wake up with joint stiffness or neck and back pain, the culprit could be your pillow. Is it time to upgrade yours?
Pillows should be much more than a casual decision or decorative after thought. Since we spend a third of our lives sleeping, it’s important that you snuggle up to a pillow that’s right for you.
Here are some options:
Latex Pillows - Choose from a solid core or a shredded filling that feels like down, but compacts over time. Latex is generally hypoallergenic, anti-microbial, mildew proof and dust mite resistant. A latex pillow should be ergonomically shaped to support your neck. That way your head is properly supported for sleeping on your side or back.
Memory Foam - This uses a denser type of foam that tends to maintain its shape. When ergonomically shaped, it can support the neck when sleeping on your back or on your side. These types of pillows tend to reduce pressure points. They continuously mold and adjust to the shape of your head and neck.
Down Pillows - Down clusters expand and intertwine to form fluffy air pockets. These are considered the top of the line and are often found on the beds of luxury hotels. However, they may not be the best at supporting your neck. They are soft and difficult to mold to provide ideal support.
Compared with conventional pillows, ergonomically designed pillows that offer cervical support can help reduce neck discomfort. Naturally, you’ll want to sleep on your back or on your side to avoid reversing the cervical curve that can occur from sleeping on your stomach!
